The United States celebrates the federal holiday Memorial Day on the last Monday in May every year. Originally the Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day, which meant to honor the union and federal soldiers who died during the American Civil War.

By the 1900s, this army had become a day to celebrate all the American soldiers serving in the US Army. It was not until 1967 that it was legally named Monument Day. It became a federal holiday in 1971.
